Maryland Institute for Emergency Medicine Services Systems Stroke (MIEMSS) DesignationIn 2005, the Maryland Emergency Medical Systems Board (EMS) established regulations for stroke centers. The regulations include requirements for hospitals that want to be designated as primary stroke centers in Maryland. MIEMSS was given the task to approve designated stroke centers in Maryland. Hospitals applying for MIEMSS stroke designation need to show evidence they have a stroke team that can give acute stroke medicines and have resources to take care of stroke patients. A hospital must complete a rigorous MIEMSS application and site visit prior to being granted stroke designation.
